Emergen-C is a powdered supplement product that contains high doses of vitamin C and B vitamins to support the immune system and improve energy levels. There are now also gummy and chewable forms of this product as well.
The formula contains 1,000 mg of vitamin C, 10 mg of B6, and 25 mcg of vitamin B12. However, the drink also contains six grams of sugar per serving. How Does Emergen-C Support the Immune System?
In Emergen-C, the high amount of vitamin C is what’s deemed the most impactful for boosting immunity. It can be effective for those who may have a vitamin C deficiency as a way to incorporate it into a daily diet.
Vitamin C is known to be effective in helping to prevent or shorten the duration of colds, but there is limited research that supports how well it reduces the risk of catching a cold for the average adult. One study showed it only reduced the risk of cold by 8% in adults. Although another study shows it can be much more effective for those who undergo brief periods of extreme physical exercise.5
Emergen-C also contains B vitamins, vitamin D, and zinc, all helpful in supporting overall health. Though not available through the original Emergen-C original, the Immune Plus formula offers the vitamin D supplement many are missing from their daily diet.
Side Effects of Emergen-C
Though generally harmless, Emergen-C formulas can also have side effects, especially when taken in high doses. Ingesting too much vitamin C, for example, can lead to symptoms, such as stomach cramps, nausea, and diarrhea. One study even suggests increased vitamin C intake on a daily basis is associated with the risk of kidney stones among men.7
There are similar side effects when taking too much B6 or zinc on a regular basis. Taking more than 50 mg of vitamin B6 daily could be cause for concern for nerve damage. Although there is limited evidence to support a true link between excessive doses and vitamin B6, people should err on the side of caution, particularly if experiencing symptoms like tingling in the hands and feet.8
In general, when using more than one packet of Emergen-C per day, it’s important to consider any excessive ingredient amounts, as well as the total grams of sugar, being added to your diet.
